The Member of Parliament for Afigya Kwabre North, Collins Adomako-Mensah, has disclosed that regional and parliamentary balance could be the reasons behind Kofi Adams’ nomination as Minister-designate of Sports and Recreation.
He explained that President John Dramani Mahama is required to appoint 60 ministers, with 30 being parliamentarians, while the rest must reflect regional balance.
The New Patriotic Party (NPP) MP noted that Kofi Adams’ constituency being in the Oti Region placed him in an advantageous position over former sports minister Nii Lante Vanderpuye.
“Earlier on, there were rumors that Nii Lante was going to return to the sports ministry. However, the president is also mindful of regional balance; that’s the challenge. You have 60 ministers, 30 must come from parliament, and the remaining 30 must reflect regional balance.
“Now, Kofi is from the Oti Region, and there are only about two or three constituencies. So, you’re in a fix as to where to place that region. I understand where the president is coming from,” he said while speaking on Good Morning Ghana.
His remarks follow concerns from some sports personalities and members of the public who were surprised by Kofi Adams’ nomination for the role of sports minister.
