Member of Parliament for the Old Tafo constituency, Vincent Ekow Assafuah has cautioned against any move to sideline players who fought to secure Ghana’s qualification for the 2026 FIFA World Cup in the United States of America, Canada and Mexico.

This comes on the back of recent comments of the Minister of Sports and Recreation, Kofi Adams, suggesting that every Ghanaian footballer could be considered for selection.

In a Facebook post by Vincent Ekow Assafuah, he stated that while the final player selection rests with the coach and technical team, fairness and respect must guide all decisions, especially toward the players who played in the qualifiers.

“These young men fought for the jersey when the odds were heavily stacked against us. Their commitment rekindled our hope as a football nation,” the statement said. “It would be unjust to downplay their contributions or create the impression that their places are now uncertain merely because new names are being suggested.”

He also urged the Ministry and the Ghana Football Association to protect the team’s unity and morale, warning that public comments about replacing players could create unnecessary division within the camp.

“Every Ghanaian with exceptional ability has the right to dream of wearing the national colours.”

“However, love for the country is truly measured in moments of greatest need. Those who answered the call when qualification was on the line deserve nothing less than dignity and appreciation,” he said.

While welcoming fresh talents, Vincent Ekow Assafuah emphasised that newcomers should complement, not displace those who sacrificed for Ghana’s qualification.

“We stand firmly with the boys who brought us this far Their sweat must not be forgotten, and it will not be in vain.”
