The Minority Caucus in Parliament on Wednesday January 22, 2025, urged President John Dramani Mahama to use Ghana’s presidential jet instead of using private flights for international duties abroad.

The minority said it was “embarrassing” for the president to travel on commercial flights while the Presidential Jet was in good condition.

Speaking on the floor of Parliament on Wednesday, Dominic Nitiwul, the former Minister of Defence, said the Presidential Jet was in good condition after undergoing servicing in Paris, France, about eight months ago.

“The difference today is that the Presidential Jet is serviceable. It can move, it is working and so, it’s wrong for the President of the Republic to be going on commercial jets while the jet Ghana uses her money to pay for and working, is ignored,” he said.

His remarks follow a communication read by the Second Deputy Speaker, Andrew Asiamah Amoakoh, informing the House that President Mahama would travel to the United Arab Emirates.

Kwame Governs Agbodza, the Member of Parliament for Adaklu and the Minister-designate for Roads and Highways, while contributing to the issue, explained that President Mahama had been using commercial flight for his journey since he assumed office on January 7, 2025.

He said President Mahama had been “moderate” by using commercial flights, unlike former President Nana Akufo-Addo who had the taste for “expensive and luxurious flights” expending so much money on that.

Agbodza’s comments sparked heated debate between the NDC Majority Caucus and their Minority counterparts, forcing the Speaker to temporarily suspend sitting for 30 minutes.
