Bono Regional Chairman of the NPP, Kwame Baffoe, popularly known as Abronye DCE
New Patriotic Party (NPP) communications team member, Kwesi Botchway Jnr, has alleged that the arrest of the party’s Bono Regional Chairman, Kwame Baffoe, popularly known as Abronye DCE, is linked to his criticism of the Inspector General of Police (IGP).
Providing an update on Abronye’s arrest, reported earlier by GhanaWeb on Monday, September 8, 2025, Botchway, a private legal practitioner, said he had spoken with Abronye’s lawyer, who confirmed the arrest but indicated he had no information on his client’s whereabouts.
“I got off the phone with Abronye’s lawyer a few minutes ago (3:20 p.m.). He confirmed to me that he does not know the whereabouts of his client. According to him, he arrived with Abronye voluntarily at the Police CID Headquarters today at 10:30 a.m. upon the invitation of the police. He indicated to me that the police interrogated Abronye for about two hours, after which he was arrested and charged with breach of peace and publication of false news,” Botchway wrote in a Facebook post.

According to the party communicator, during the interrogation, Abronye was shown a video of himself criticising the Inspector General of Police, Christian Tetteh Yohuno, which allegedly formed the basis of the arrest and charges.
“It is important to add that, during the interrogation, a video was played where Abronye was seen and heard criticising the Inspector General of Police, Christian Tetteh Yohuno. (This video forms the foundation of the arrest and charges),” he stated.
Botchway further revealed that after the interrogation at the CID Headquarters, Abronye’s lawyer was informed that his client was being transferred to the National Investigations Bureau (NIB).
However, upon arriving at the NIB, he was told that Abronye had not been brought there. As of 1:00 p.m., the lawyer had yet to confirm his client’s whereabouts.

The arrest follows Abronye’s recent move to seek political asylum in eight countries, including Côte d’Ivoire and the United States, citing political persecution, threats to his life, and abuse of state security powers by the current National Democratic Congress (NDC) government.
Meanwhile, the Ghana Police Service has yet to issue an official statement on the arrest.
