The General Secretary of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Justin Frimpong Kodua, has strongly rebuked founding member Dr Nyaho Nyaho-Tamakloe, for his recent critical remarks regarding the party’s leadership and response to the arrest of Chairman Wontumi.

His reaction follows statements made by Dr Nyaho Nyaho Tamakloe during an interview with JoyNews on May 30, 2025, that “where is the NPP National Chairman” – suggesting an apparent absence of the NPP leadership in the brouhaha surrounding the arrest and subsequent detention of Wontumi at the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO) headquarters.

Responding to these claims on JoyNews on May 30, 2025, Justin Kodua expressed surprise and disappointment at Dr Tamakloe’s assertion that the party “currently has no leadership.”

He specifically took issue with Dr Tamakloe’s perceived lack of concern over the manner of Chairman Wontumi’s arrest.

“I am very surprised that Dr Nyaho Nyaho-Tamakloe, a founding member of our party, chose not to criticise the manner in which Chairman Wontumi was arrested,” Kodua stated.

“He saw nothing wrong with the rough and rambo style our Chairman was taken into custody. That in itself is troubling.” He added.

He also underscored the significant challenges the party has since faced in meeting Chairman Wontumi’s stringent bail conditions.

“As I speak, they have imposed unreasonable bail conditions which we are finding very difficult to meet,” he explained.

Justin Kodua found it surprising that a founding member of the party does not sympathise with the trauma, issues, and the challenges that the party is going through, but instead chooses to criticise the very party he helped to establish.

The General Secretary also challenged Dr Tamakloe’s allusions to past party leaders, suggesting they would have acted differently.

“I’m even more surprised that he refers to former chairpersons as though they would have done the same,” Kodua remarked.

“If those people truly respected the rule of law, most of them being constitutional lawyers—they wouldn’t have stayed silent. They would have spoken out and supported our members who have been taken to the NIB and EOCO,” he added.

Describing the current situation as “deeply concerning and unacceptable,” Kodua condemned Chairman Wontumi’s prolonged detention and the “outrageous bail conditions.”

“We have detained a citizen of this country from Tuesday to Friday, and he’s facing outrageous bail conditions. If this is not political persecution, then what else is it?” he questioned.

Justin Kodua concluded by affirming the party’s right to protest and demand justice.

“We want the world to know what is happening in Ghana and what is happening to our Chairman. We have every right to demonstrate our displeasure,” he stated.

“Yes, we can go to court as an option but nothing also stops us from going to the EOCO headquarters to solidarise with our Regional Chairman,” he said.
