The New Patriotic Party (NPP) is implementing stricter measures for its upcoming presidential primary, emphasising a clear directive, vote and leave.

According to a report by citinewsroom.com on January 27,2026, Joseph Osei Owusu, Chairman of the NPP’s Presidential Elections Committee, announced that group gatherings at polling centers will be explicitly prohibited on voting day.

“In our party’s rules, one thing we have insisted on is that on that day, we will not expect any group to congregate anywhere. You walk in, vote and leave. We don’t want to see people gathering under a shed or a canopy in the constituencies,” he stated.

This initiative aims to ensure a peaceful and orderly election process.

The directive is part of a broader set of rules communicated to all presidential aspirants and their representatives.

Additionally, arrangements have been finalised in collaboration with the Electoral Commission (EC).

Delegates are expected to cast their votes and depart the premises immediately after voting.

“We discourage that; it’s part of the rules we shared. We don’t want anybody to provide any such,” he cautioned.

The party is also cracking down on the practice of busing delegates, which is explicitly banned under NPP rules.

The primary election, scheduled for January 31,2026, is a crucial step in the party’s efforts to reorganise and strategise after its defeat in the 2024 general elections.

The contenders for the NPP flagbearer position include Kennedy Agyapong, former Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, Kwabena Agyepong, Dr Yaw Osei Adutwum and Dr Bryan Acheampong.
