The 2024 presidential candidate of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, has refuted claims that his religion and ethnicity contributed to the party’s defeat in the 2024 elections.
Addressing party members at the NPP headquarters in Accra on Wednesday, April 23, 2025, he stated that an analysis of the data revealed that, as a Muslim candidate, he outperformed the party’s Christian parliamentary candidates, even in constituencies dominated by Christians.
“I decided to do some data analysis to test this hypothesis. And when you look at the data, the data is very clear. In many constituencies across the country, the NPP presidential candidate performed better than the Christian parliamentary candidates.
“So, it couldn’t be. If they were voting based on religion, I shouldn’t be performing better than the Christian parliamentary candidates,” he noted.
