A long-time New Patriotic Party (NPP) executive of the Canada wing of the party, William Akoto, has said he was unworried when the Speaker of Parliament, Alban Bagbin, first adjourned Parliament indefinitely over the Supreme Court decision in the matter of the declaration of some four seats vacant.

However, he says he now believes the Speaker’s move to suspend parliamentary business indefinitely for the second time in a row reeks of partisan politics.

Speaking in a social media post, he said, “It seems the Speaker is part of the official NDC campaign team because his behaviour and utterances on this subject matter shows he wants to orchestrate a win for the Minority before the general election in a democratic Ghana.

“A country that has been practicing democracy for well over half a century. How do you suddenly flip and fabricate such a political event in parliament?“

It will be recalled that on the subject of the recall of Parliament on Thursday, November 7, 2024, Alban Bagbin adjourned the house indefinitely due to what he said was the lack of business following the absence of NPP members from the House even though they requested the recall.

The Member of Parliament for Effutu, who also heads the NPP caucus, explained their absence as the Clerk of Parliament had failed to print the necessary document which outlines the agenda for deliberation in Parliament.

He added that this left the NPP unable to participate in the business of the House on the day.

With several voices weighing in on the stalemate in Parliament, William Akoto further stated that he believes Parliament needs to work at the utmost level for the people of Ghana.

“To put in perspective, when you hire employees, they are managed and led by a manager. The leader or manager is solely responsible for any sort of misfunctioning and lack of working cooperation between the employees. A country that has been practicing democracy for well over half a century, how do you suddenly flip and fabricate such a political event in Parliament in favour of one specific group?“ he added.

It is, however, unclear when Parliament will reconvene again, but Akoto remains confident continuous dialogue with the Speaker of Parliament will address the deadlock.
