The running mate of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) flagbearer for the 2024 general election, Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh, popularly known as NAPO, has blamed former Finance Minister Ken Ofori-Atta for the economic difficulties Ghana experienced under President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo.

Speaking in an interview on Asempa FM, monitored by Ghanapoliticsonline.com, NAPO said responsibility for the economic downturn should not be placed on Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, insisting that Ofori-Atta was the chief manager of the economy.

According to him, the widespread dissatisfaction with Ofori-Atta’s performance explains why about 80 NPP Members of Parliament at the time demanded his immediate removal from office as Finance Minister and Minister of State at the Finance Ministry.

The MPs cited economic mismanagement, poor fiscal decisions, and ethical concerns as reasons for their revolt against the former finance boss.

NAPO argued that the MPs’ actions clearly showed who was truly in charge of the economy.

“If Bawumia was responsible for managing the economy, the MPs would have asked for his removal,” he said. “They went after Ofori-Atta because they knew he was the one handling the economy.”
