The Ghana Health Service (GHS) in the North East Region has set out to achieve universal coverage of Covid-19 vaccination.

The service in the region has thus far vaccinated 84.1 percent of the eligible population.

A total of 328,691 people have been fully vaccinated as of January 20, 2023.

Those who have also taken at least one dose, stand at 327,235 and individuals who have gone for their booster jabs are 101,405.

The North East Regional Director of GHS, Dr. Abdulai Abukari revealed this at a stakeholder meeting in Nalerigu on Monday, January 23, 2023.

In giving the district performance breakdown, Mr. Abukari said, “The Yunyoo-Nasuan district is the best-performing district achieving 102.2 percent coverage, followed by West Mamprusi with 99.5 percent and Bunkpurugu-Nankpanduri district with 79.1 percent.”

Other districts are East Mamprusi with 71.0 percent, Mamprugu-Moagduri 67.6 percent and the Chereponi district managing 60.2 percent vaccination coverage in the region.

The Regional Director, Dr. Abukari noted that despite the challenges in the region, it was adjudged the highest-performing region in the country as far as the COVID-19 vaccination is concerned.

He pledged to maintain the position by appealing to all stakeholders to be on board and called on those who are yet to vaccinate to avail themselves.

“Regardless of our challenges as a new region, we are the highest performing region in the country, as far as COVID-19 vaccination is concerned with 84.1% fully vaccinated. A position we have held for several months now and which we hope to maintain with the support of all of us”.

The Regional Director said the directorate has rolled out the 6th National Covid-19 Vaccination Campaign under the theme: “Protect yourself, protect your family, get vaccinated against Covid-19”.

He said the goal is to reach and vaccinate all eligible members of the population who are 15 years and above with potent Covid-19 vaccines.

Dr Abdulai Abukari said the country is not out of the woods yet and implored the public to ensure they get vaccinated to remain safe.

“I think that we are all aware that the national response to Covid-19 has seen significant improvement over the past three years, but we also know that globally, we are not yet out of the woods. I wish to implore all to use our good offices to enhance awareness creation about the campaign”.
