A private legal practitioner and member of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) communications team, Hamza Sayibu Suhuyini, has praised the NDC for fostering an environment that protects and encourages dissent, press freedom, and civic expression.

Addressing recent criticisms from the Ghana Bar Association (GBA) on TV3’s “New Day” on Tuesday, July 1, Suhuyini asserted that such open criticisms are indicative of the NDC’s tolerance for opposing views.

“It is exciting because it shows that during the reign of a particular political party, the National Democratic Congress (NDC), dissenting views, which is a fundamental pillar of democratic governance, is encouraged,” he stated.

He argued that under the NDC’s leadership, citizens can voice their criticisms of the government without fear of political retaliation or state harassment.

“There is no way you speak your mind and find it difficult to go home,” Suhuyini declared.

“Even if your views go against the government, you are rest assured that nobody will use state power to harass you,” he said.

Referring to recent attacks on journalists in the country, Suhuyini drew a veiled comparison between political regimes, suggesting the NDC upholds civil liberties more consistently than its opponents.

“I’m pretty much convinced that you have come to accept that your freedoms were meddled on the streets in broad daylight like we witnessed in the past. May the soul of Ahmed Suale rest in peace,” he stated.

Suhuyini urged institutions like the GBA to appreciate the democratic space they operate within, attributing it to the NDC’s steadfast commitment to Ghana’s constitutional freedoms.

“These freedoms we represent simply constitute a manifestation of our commitment to the fundamental laws of this country,” he said.
