Ghanaian musician and LGBT+ rights advocate, Sister Derby, has sparked a fresh wave of discussions on social media with her recent tweet criticising Ghanaian presidents for their stance on the controversial anti-LGBT+ bill.

In her tweet, Sister Derby claimed that many Ghanaian presidents are reluctant to sign the bill into law due to an awareness of its potential negative implications.

“No president from Ghana wants to sign it. They know better,” she posted.

In an earlier interview on MX24 TV, she argued that there is no credible evidence supporting claims of a “gay agenda” in schools and emphasized that LGBT+ individuals have always been part of Ghanaian society, contributing significantly to entertainment and creativity.

According to her, much of the hostility stems from a fear of the talents and unique qualities of LGBT+ individuals.

The tweet comes in the wake of ongoing debates surrounding the Proper Human Sexual Rights and Ghanaian Family Values Bill, which was passed by Parliament in February 2024 but has yet to be signed into law by President Akufo-Addo.

The bill, which includes severe penalties for same-sex intercourse, promotion of LGBTQ activities, and bans on LGBT+ organizations and trans healthcare, has been a point of contention among human rights activists and the general public.

Sister Derby, known for her outspoken support of LGBT+ rights, has consistently voiced her opposition to the bill.
