Erling Haaland has admitted there is “no excuse” for his recent goal drought, insisting the solution is to keep improving.

The Manchester City striker scored the winner in Sunday’s 2–1 victory at Anfield, but it was only his third goal in 13 appearances this year. In the Premier League, his only two strikes have come from penalties, a stark contrast to the 25 goals he netted in his first 23 games for City this season.

Despite a heavy workload — 41 appearances for club and country in the campaign — Haaland refused to blame fatigue. “I haven’t scored enough goals since the start of this year and I know that I need to improve,” he said. “I need to be sharper, better at all aspects, and this is something I have to work on. I have to keep going because this is what everyone deserves and expects.”

Haaland added: “I don’t want to speak about why I haven’t performed. I don’t think there’s any excuse. Fatigue is a lot in the head. There’s a lot of games. For me, it’s about staying fit, not getting injured, and being ready to help the team.”

The Norwegian’s strike was his first goal at Anfield and secured only Manchester City’s second victory there since 2003. “I never won here before, so it’s amazing to come and win for the first time,” he said. “It’s not easy because of the history City and Liverpool have had over the last decade. The emotions with the fans at the end were amazing.”

City’s win cut the gap to league leaders Arsenal to six points, though Haaland denied it was meant as a message to Mikel Arteta’s side. “No, not really. But it sends a good statement to our fans,” he noted. -The
