THE Greater Accra Regional Minister, Ms Linda Obenewaa Akweley Ocloo, has declared the Nmai Djor–Trasacco, Borteyman enclave a security zone with immediate effect to ensure peace and maintain law and order.

Consequently, she has directed the suspension of all development activities in the area pending the final determination of ongoing court cases over land ownership.

To prevent a breakdown of law and order, the minister announced the deployment of joint police and military patrols, stressing that only security personnel officially authorised by the Regional Security Council (REGSEC) would be permitted to operate within the enclave.

Ms Ocloo said the decision followed intelligence reports pointing to simmering land disputes between traditional authorities and family interests, which could escalate into violence if left unchecked.

She explained that the Nmai Djor–Trasacco, Borteyman enclave, located within the Adentan West Municipality, had become a flashpoint due to competing land ownership claims, necessitating swift and decisive intervention by security agencies to protect lives and property.

The minister warned that any individual or entity that defied the directive and continued with development activities would face strict enforcement actions, including the demolition of unauthorised structures.

Ms Ocloo made the announcement during a meeting with the Regional Security Council (REGSEC) and Metropolitan, Municipal and District Chief Executives (MMDCEs) in Accra on Friday to assess security developments in the region.

She said REGSEC would closely monitor developments in the area to safeguard residents and preserve peace.

Beyond land-related security concerns, the Regional Minister expressed grave concern over the rising incidence of fire outbreaks in markets across the region, describing the situation as a threat to livelihoods and public safety.

According to her, investigations by REGSEC had identified the mixed use of market spaces, including their conversion into residential and other non-commercial purposes, as a leading cause of fires, significantly heightening risk levels in already congested trading areas.

She noted that all Metropolitan, Municipal and District Assemblies (MMDAs) had been directed to intensify public education campaigns to sensitise traders and the general public on fire prevention and the dangers associated with unsafe practices in markets.

Ms Ocloo also urged MMDAs to make provision for designated spaces within markets for the permanent stationing of personnel of the Ghana National Fire Service, to ensure swift emergency response and minimise losses.

She assured the public of REGSEC’s unwavering commitment to safeguarding the wellbeing of residents of Greater Accra.
