Nine people sustained gunshot and other injuries on Friday morning after masked armed men stormed the Ho Central Mosque in the Volta Region, firing sporadically during a violent confrontation linked to a chieftaincy dispute.
The incident occurred around 9:30 a.m. at the Sabong-Zango area of Ho and was reportedly connected to a long-standing disagreement between two rival factions claiming leadership of the Volta Regional Chief Imam position.
Confirming the incident, the Volta Regional Police Public Affairs Officer, Chief Inspector Francis Gomado, said 10 suspects had been arrested and were assisting with investigations. He added that some of the attackers, who arrived at the scene in a pick-up vehicle, managed to flee before police personnel arrived.
Chief Inspector Gomado said calm had since returned to the area following swift police intervention.
According to him, six spent cartridges were retrieved from the scene, while a manhunt had been launched for the remaining suspects who escaped.
The injured victims were rushed to hospital, where they are currently receiving treatment. Police have assured residents of increased security presence to maintain peace and order.
