Nigeria will face Algeria in the quarter-final of the AFCON Nigeria will face Algeria in the quarter-final of the AFCON

Nigeria’s Minister of Finance, Doris Nkiruka Uzoka-Anite, has confirmed significant progress in resolving outstanding bonus payments for the Super Eagles at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).

This clears the way for the team to resume training in full focus on their quarter-final clash against Algeria on January 10, 2026.

In an update issued on Thursday, January 8, 2026, the minister said the Federal Government, working with the Central Bank of Nigeria, has streamlined the foreign exchange process to ensure players receive their match bonuses without further delay.

According to Uzoka-Anite, all group-stage bonuses have been fully released and have passed the required regulatory stages. She added that a fast-track conversion process has been implemented to move funds into foreign currency in line with players’ preferences.

“The final transfers to domiciliary accounts are currently in flight, and players can expect the funds to reflect starting today or tomorrow,” the minister stated.

The update follows reports earlier this week of training disruptions by the Super Eagles over unpaid bonuses, which had raised concerns about preparations for the knockout stage of the tournament.

Uzoka-Anite assured that measures have now been put in place to prevent similar delays in the future, noting that the process has been aligned with international best practice to allow for faster and more predictable disbursements.

“Our focus remains entirely on supporting the team’s welfare so they can maintain their momentum in the knockout rounds,” she said.

With the issue now resolved, the Super Eagles are expected to travel to Marrakesh to continue preparations for quarter-final encounter against Algeria, as they chase a place in the semi-finals and a potential title run at AFCON 2025.
