The President of the Nigeria Boxing Board of Control, Dr. Rafiu Oladipo, has called on the Ghana Boxing Authority to provide a full explanation regarding the circumstances surrounding the death of Nigerian boxer Oluwasegun Olanrewaju.

Olanrewaju, a former West African light-heavyweight champion, passed out during a boxing bout on Saturday, March 29, 2025, at the Bukom Boxing Arena.

The 40-year-old was later pronounced dead after he was taken to the Korle Bu Teaching Hospital. Amidst the shock and grief, Dr. Oladipo has urged the Ghana Boxing Authority to provide the necessary answers regarding Olanrewaju’s tragic demise.

In an interview with Sporty FM, Dr. Oladipo acknowledged Nigeria’s sorrow over the loss of their citizen but called on the Ghana Boxing Authority to clarify the circumstances surrounding his death.

“The Ghana Boxing Authority (GBA) needs to explain to us the circumstances that led to our boxer’s death. The Nigerian boxing fraternity is in a state of mourning. He has a wife and three children, who will take care of them? We need answers from the Ghana Boxing Authority,” he said.

The exact cause of his death remains unknown, but Dr. Oladipo confirmed that, due to the holidays in Ghana, his autopsy is scheduled for Wednesday, April 2, 2025.

“We spoke to the GBA, but they told us Oluwasegun Olanrewaju’s body is at the mortuary. However, as it’s a holiday in Ghana, the autopsy will be done on Wednesday,” he added.
