Team Nigeria made history at the 2025 Africa Basketball Festival (ABF) on Sunday December 14, 2025, clinching their first-ever title after defeating Ghana, Liberia and China.

The landmark victory was particularly significant as it marked the first time Nigeria has defeated Ghana at ABF, ending Ghana’s three-year consecutive victories.

Ghana, who had been the team to beat in previous editions, saw their reign come to an end in front of a packed home crowd. The opening game, played on December 12, 2025, featured a highly anticipated clash between host nation Ghana and Nigeria.

In a tense and competitive encounter, Nigeria edged Ghana 52–48, setting the tone for their historic run and signaling a shift in the tournament’s power balance.

Nigeria’s journey was not without challenges. They suffered a narrow three-point defeat to Team Lebanon in their second game but quickly rebounded with a hard-fought 47–44 victory over Team Liberia to stay in contention for the title.

The championship was sealed in dramatic fashion as Nigeria delivered a dominant performance against Team China, cruising to a commanding 114–37 win in the final game of the tournament. With three crucial victories, Nigeria emerged as overall champions of ABF 2025.

The fifth edition of the Africa Basketball Festival was staged to celebrate its fifth anniversary, featuring five days of action, five (5) participating countries Ghana, Nigeria, Liberia, China, and Lebanon and five (5) fashion brands.

The event attracted over 5,000 attendees who were entertained by the high-energy basketball, dazzling music performances and glittering fashion show.

The 2025 Africa Basketball Festival is sponsored by the Ghana Basketball Association and the Ghana Tourism Authority. The event is produced by RITE Sports Services and hosted by the University of Ghana Sports & Wellness Directorate.
