A unit block in Newcastle has sustained extensive fire and water damage after a ‘petrol bomb’ was reportedly thrown at a front door.

Firefighters rushed to Brunker Road in Adamstown just before 6pm on Monday after a doorway of a unit on the third floor was set alight.

Crews were able to contain the blaze to the exterior of the building and carried out ‘salvage work’ across the three levels.

An automated sprinkler system in the block was activated and caused water damage from the third floor down to the ground floor.

Four Fire and Rescue NSW tankers were sent to the unit block in addition to a rehabilitation van to help put out the blaze.

Crews handed the scene over to police after the fire was extinguished at 8pm.

Investigations continue into the circumstances of the blaze.

Anyone with information about the fire has been urged to contact Crime Stoppers.
