Former National Youth Organiser of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Sammi Awuku, has called on the National Democratic Congress (NDC) to support some of its members to attend the 2026 World Cup.
According to the former National Lottery Authority (NLA) boss, party supporters, commonly referred to as foot soldiers, deserve to be appreciated and rewarded for their contributions to election campaigns and other party activities.
He suggested that the NDC government should consider sponsoring some of these supporters, often nicknamed “body cam” operatives during campaigns, as a way of recognising and motivating them.
We have been chasing some players, but they don’t pick our calls – Otto
“I know I may sound controversial on this, but I remain unapologetic. During the NPP’s era, I said that if Ghana had qualified for the 2018 World Cup, I would have helped NPP supporters to go and watch. They’re also Ghanaians. Some people vote for political parties but never receive any benefits. The NDC writes ‘5K Body Cam Activated’ on some people and uses them for campaigns.
“As a party, they should be able to support about 20,000 of their fans to watch this World Cup. Some of these party foot soldiers don’t earn anything. If the party gives them the World Cup experience, they’ll be emboldened to take on the ‘5K Body Cam’ role anytime,” he said in an interview with Peace FM in Twi.
The Black Stars secured their place at the 2026 World Cup after topping Group I with 25 points.
