President-elect John Mahama has assured Ghanaians that the National Democratic Congress (NDC) majority in Parliament will act responsibly for the betterment of the nation.

He indicated that with a massive 186 seats, the NDC will prioritise the country’s best interests and uphold Ghana’s democracy, avoiding actions that could harm it.

The President-elect also stressed that the majority will collaborate with the minority in Parliament in making major decisions and not override them due to their numbers.

“We’re not going to misuse the majority we have in Parliament. Even though we have a huge majority, more than two-thirds, we’re not going to misuse it. We’re going to consult with the minority at every stage and make sure that we do things by consensus instead of railroading everybody.”

He made the statement during a visit by Chief Imam Sheikh Osman Nuhu Sharubutu and his delegation on December 12, 2024.

He also stressed his commitment to ensuring democracy prevails in the country.

“Everybody knows that I’m a typical diplomat and I believe in consensus building and democracy. I’m not a supreme leader. I’m going to continue to work the way I’ve always been as a Democrat, and we’ll continue to consult with our colleagues who are in the NPP,” he added.

The NDC government is set to be inaugurated on January 7, 2024, following their significant victory in the 2024 general elections.
