The Minority Caucus of Parliament has raised concerns about the National Democratic Congress (NDC) Majority Caucus’s inability to bring at least 91 Members of Parliament (MPs) into the chamber.

“… Despite having 183 MPs and an additional four independent MPs totaling 187, the NDC has struggled to meet the required quorum,” Habib Iddrisu, the First Deputy Minority Whip, has said.

Addressing the parliamentary press corps after the adjournment of the parliament on Friday due to the lack of a quorum to do business, Iddrisu, also a New Patriotic Party (NPP) MP for Tolon, said the actions of the majority had sparked questions about an alleged internal division or lack of commitment to their legislative duties.

“… We are concerned about the NDC’s inability to meet the quorum, it’s a clear indication of their weakness and lack of commitment to their duties,” Iddrisu said.

He added: “The speaker’s attendance in the house further highlights their struggles to maintain order and discipline within their ranks.”

The NDC’s failure to muster a quorum comes after the party won a majority in parliament with 183 seats in the 2024 general elections, while the NPP secured 88 seats, and independents won four seats.

The issue has also brought to the forefront the underrepresentation of women in parliament, with women accounting for only 15 percent of MPs.

“This is a wake-up call for the NDC to get their act together and address the internal issues that are hindering their ability to govern effectively,” said Iddrisu.

The NDC’s leadership has yet to comment on the matter, but the opposition NPP has seized on the issue, calling for greater accountability and transparency from the ruling party.
