The National Democratic Congress (NDC) has unveiled a six-volume publication documenting the party’s and the 4th Republic of Ghana’s political history. This is described as a significant step towards preserving its legacy and strengthening institutional memory for future generations.

The collection traces the party’s journey from its formation to the present day, capturing key milestones including media coverage of the NDC over the years, leadership elections, manifesto development, constitutional reforms and other defining moments in the party’s evolution.

As a prelude to the main launch scheduled for September 28, 2026, at the University of Professional Studies, Accra (UPSA), copies of the books were formally presented to the National Chairman of the NDC, Mr. Johnson Asiedu Nketiah, and the party.

Receiving the books, Mr. Asiedu Nketiah said the project marks only the beginning of a broader effort to ensure the party systematically documents its history and administrative records.

“We will move ahead to a point where we will be able to document the minutes of our meetings. When you want to refer to a decision the party has ever taken, you should be able to trace the meeting, the date and the minutes to see exactly how those decisions were made,” he said.

He commended the team behind the project for compiling historical records, including the party’s original founding documents submitted to the Electoral Commission during its registration.

“We now have correct documentation of how the party was founded, the original founding documents with the original signatures of our founding fathers and our journey from our first election up to today,” he added.

Mr Asiedu Nketiah explained that the publication includes a manifesto volume that chronicles the changing priorities of the country through successive election manifestos.

“When you read the manifesto scroll closely, it gives you an indication of what the national needs were at the time those manifestos were prepared. It helps people appreciate where the nation has come from,” he explained.

He added that another volume documents the evolution of the NDC’s constitution, providing historical context to current debates on internal party governance.

Reflecting on the party’s formative years, the National Chairman recounted how parliamentary candidates were initially selected before the introduction of competitive internal primaries, describing how the NDC’s democratic structures have evolved over time.

The official launch, according to Oswald Okaitei, a member of the Book Launch Planning Committee, will feature book review discussions featuring notable political figures and academics on selected chapters of the historiographies to stimulate conversations on the party’s history, institutional development and contribution to Ghana’s democratic journey.

He also noted that “Beyond serving as a reference for the political heritage of the fourth Republic of Ghana, it is planned that proceeds from the sale of the books will also be used to support cancer treatment and the cardio therapy unit”.

The party, through its Chairman, Mr. Asiedu Nketiah, has encouraged both its members and the general public to purchase the books in support of the initiative.
