A former Greater Accra Regional Minister, Daniel Nii Kwartei Titus Glover, has accused President John Dramani Mahama and the National Democratic Congress (NDC) of having the penchant for persecuting the judiciary, a claim he insists has existed since the Provisional National Defence Council (PNDC) era.

Speaking in an interview with GhanaWeb at the “Save the Judiciary Demo” which took place on May, 5, 2025, he termed the ongoing process to remove Chief Justice Gertrude Torkornoo as persecution and an attack on the judiciary.

He consequently warned the Mahama-led administration that the New Patriotic Party (NPP) would resist any such attempt to interfere with the judiciary; one of the three main branches of government.

“I want to assure the NDC that in the NPP, we have the numbers. The NPP will not sit down for this country to be turned upside down. The NDC traces their forefathers to the PNDC – they have a problem with the judiciary,” he alleged.

He cited the unfortunate killing of three judges: Justice Cecilia Koranteng-Addow, Justice Frederick Poku Sarkodee and Justice Kwadwo Agyei Agyepong in 1982, to support his argument.

“Remember the killing of the judges: Cecilia Koranteng-Addow, Kwadwo Agyei Agyepong; and others who were shot in cold blood? During the time of Georgina Woode, when they came to power in 2009 – the NDC wanted to take off Theodora Woode. There were series of machinations to take the woman out.

“There are things I don’t want to say on camera. They’ve done this before. They killed judges because they were dissatisfied with their rulings. Theodora Woode was once about to be taken off but they never succeeded. Now, they want to try Esaaba. (Chief Justice Gertrude Torkornoo) What has she done?” he fumed.

The New Patriotic Party (NPP) embarked on “Save the Judiciary Demo” on May 5, 2025, to protest against the imminent removal of Chief Justice Gertrude Torkornoo.

They argued that the suspension of the Chief Justice is politically-motivated and an attack on judicial independence, following the controversial suspension of the Chief Justice.

Other participating parties included the Liberal Party of Ghana (LPG), People’s National Convention (PNC), among others.
