In a sharply worded statement, the National Democratic Congress (NDC) rejected the Electoral Commission’s (EC) re-collated parliamentary election results, which showed that the New Patriotic Party (NPP) had won seven of the nine constituencies. General Secretary Fifi Fiavi Kwetey signed the statement, which refers to “questionable and illegal circumstances” surrounding the findings. A “blatant assault on Ghana’s democratic principles and a betrayal of the sovereign will of the Ghanaian people” is how the NDC describes the EC’s conduct. The party claims that the EC willfully undermines the integrity of Ghana’s election process by continuously pursuing a course of “illegality and impunity.”

According to the NDC, Jean Mensa’s leadership of the EC has weakened its mission and increased popular skepticism. Declaring that “electoral crimes have no expiration date, and the date of reckoning will come,” the party denounces the EC’s conduct. Additionally, the statement claims that the EC is working with military and police leadership to rig election results. The National Peace Council and other moral organizations have been silent on the issue, which has disappointed the NDC. As a “flagrant violation of the law” and a “clear indication of their contempt for due process and the rule of law,” the NDC also charges the EC with willfully ignoring a Stay of Execution order that was served against them.

As they see the EC’s actions as a serious danger to Ghana’s peace, stability, and democratic advancement, the NDC urges the international world to pay attention. The party is steadfast in its commitment to upholding justice and the people’s will. “We will not give up in our struggle to protect the people’s will and guarantee justice,” the statement says.We urge the government and the EC to stop trying to weaken Ghana’s democracy in the future.Ghanaians will continue to be rallied by the NDC to oppose any attempt to revoke the people’s mandate. The NDC has pledged to keep up the struggle for Ghanaians’ rights and to make sure that the nation’s democratic values are respected after January 7, 2025.
