A call has been made to the National Democratic Congress (NDC) to avoid appointing or supporting independent Members of Parliament (MPs) to protect the party’s unity and long-term interests. The advice stems from concerns about the increasing trend of party members breaking away to run as independents, potentially undermining the party’s strength and stability.

In a statement, it was noted that the appointment of Hon. Andrew Asiamah, an independent MP, as Deputy Speaker of Parliament in 2021, created challenges for both the NPP and the NDC. The event reportedly inspired more individuals to pursue the independent path, often at the expense of their original parties.

The 2024 general election has seen a significant rise in independent candidates, many of whom left their parties to challenge official candidates. According to the statement, some of these individuals aim to secure political appointments or influence through their independent status, potentially destabilizing their former parties.

The statement urged the NDC leadership to focus solely on supporting MPs who are aligned with the party. It emphasized that independent MPs, particularly those who broke away, should not be rewarded with appointments or support.

“Supporting such individuals will only encourage others in future elections to break away from the party, undermining its stability. They must not believe that they will receive enticing appointments as a way back into the party,” the statement read.

The NDC currently has 187 elected MPs, deemed sufficient to conduct parliamentary business effectively without relying on independents. The party is encouraged to use this opportunity to reset the expectations of prospective independent candidates, ensuring that loyalty and party unity remain paramount.

This advice comes at a critical time as political parties prepare for the 2024 elections, where party cohesion will be key to electoral success.
