The Ghana Weightlifting Federation elective congress election has been stopped by officials of the National Security after executives of the Federation defied an injunction order.
One may recall that the former NDC Parliamentary Aspirant for the Odododiodio Constituency, Michael Nii Annan Yarboi, filed an injunction, praying for the Accra High Court to halt the election due to malpractices.
Speaking in an interview with JoySports, Ghanaian female weightlifter, Marie Korkor Agbah-Hughes, confirmed that the federation was served with notice of an injunction from an Accra High Court, however, it still made plans to organise the election on Saturday, March 8, 2025, therefore, leading to the abrupt halt.
“We were supposed to have the Weightlifting [Federation] elections, but there was an injunction sent because the elections committee was running an illegal election. The board for the Weightlifting Federation had their term run out on February 18, but they were still going to go ahead with the elections,” she said.
Jerry Ahmed Shaib, the New Patriotic Party’s Second Deputy Minority Whip, who is running for a second term on the federation, is locking horns with Michael Nii Yarboi Annan for the presidential position.
The officials of the National Security stormed the election venue after an uproar started between supporters of the two presidential candidates.
It is unclear who invited the National Security officers, however, they ordered the process to end immediately after peace was restored.
