Accra is set to come alive with food, music and family-friendly entertainment as the National Chicken Festival takes over Osu Oxford Street to usher in the New Year with an all-night celebration centred on chicken cuisine, culture and entertainment.
The festival, scheduled for December 31, 2025, from 12:30 a.m. to 6:00 a.m., and January 1, 2026, from 12:00 p.m. to 4:00 a.m., will feature a buy-one-get-one-free entry offer, alongside free grilled chicken and fresh chicken for New Year cooking.
The National Broiler Directorate, under the Office of the Minister of State for Special Initiatives, says the event draws inspiration from the national ‘Nkoko Nkitinkiti’ concept, which has gained prominence as both a cultural expression and a call to consume locally produced chicken, much like the tradition many Ghanaians grew up with during Christmas celebrations.
The initiative forms part of a government policy aimed at transforming Ghana’s poultry industry by promoting the consumption of home-grown chicken to create jobs, reduce imports, and ensure that Ghanaians consume organic, made-in-Ghana poultry products.
“Nkoko Nkitinkiti, Akɛsɛɛ Akɛsɛɛ” is a popular Akan expression often used to convey excitement, liveliness and abundance. In recent times, the phrase has taken on deeper national significance following the launch of the Nkoko Nkitinkiti poultry revitalisation programme by President John Dramani Mahama.
On November 13, 2025, President Mahama unveiled the flagship initiative in Kumasi as part of broader efforts to revive Ghana’s poultry sector, create jobs and significantly reduce the country’s heavy reliance on imported frozen chicken.
The National Broiler Project Directorate is tasked with promoting the commercial viability and sustainability of the President’s vision. The Directorate brings together existing facilities alongside new poultry infrastructure to ensure Ghana achieves its core production and food-security targets.
