Ghanaian defender Nathaniel Adjei has expressed his excitement after earning a place in the Black Stars squad for Ghana’s upcoming international friendly against Mexico on May 22.

The FC Lorient defender returns to the national team setup after enduring a difficult period with injuries following his maiden senior call-up during Ghana’s 2025 Africa Cup of Nations qualifier against Niger.

Adjei suffered an ankle injury in that game and was forced off after just 40 minutes, an unfortunate setback that kept him out of action for almost a year.

Despite the long recovery, the 23-year-old managed to make 14 appearances for Lorient this season.

Speaking after his latest invitation, the defender admitted he was happy to be back with the national team after months of hard work and patience.

“It feels great, honestly. It’s been a long journey, but I stayed focused and kept working hard. I’m happy to be back with the boys and ready to give my best again,” Adjei said in an interview with GHANAsoccernet.com.

The centre-back also shared his thoughts ahead of the clash against Mexico, insisting the team is fully prepared for the challenge.

“It’s going to be a tough game, but I’m prepared and confident. The aim is always to compete well, follow the coach’s plan and get a positive result,” he added.

Ghana will face Mexico on May 22 before taking on Wales on June 2 as preparations continue for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

The Black Stars have been drawn in Group L and will open their campaign against Panama on June 17 before facing England and Croatia in the remaining group matches.
