Ghanaian actress and presenter Nana Ama McBrown has officially decided to relinquish the ‘Empress’ title to gospel musician Empress Gifty.
Instead, she will be taking on the title of ‘Her Excellency.’
This decision came during a courtesy visit to gospel musician Empress Gifty, following the passing of her mother.
In a video shared on Facebook and spotted by GhanaWeb, McBrown could be seen sitting next to Empress Gifty, both of them in a jovial mood.
McBrown explained that she first adopted the ‘Empress’ title after using it in a movie, which led to fans calling her by that name.
However, she later discovered that Empress Gifty was also using the title and had officially gazetted it.
“So I realized that the ‘Empress’ name was troubling me. That is why I said I don’t want the Empress title again because my sister has gazetted the name,” McBrown said amidst laughter.
Acknowledging Gifty’s established association with the title, McBrown hilariously added, “Everyone in Ghana knew that when the title Empress is mentioned, they think of Empress Gifty first before thinking of me. She has already gazetted the name. Me, I don’t want second-hand titles. I have taken the title ‘Your Excellency,’ and she will take the title, Gazetted Empress.”
This move marks an end to the longtime feud between the two personalities who have built their brands over the ‘Empress’ title.
The two Empresses
Beyond their rivalry on TV and the petty jabs exchanged online, McBrown and Empress Gifty had long been caught in a ‘tug-of-war’ over the ‘Empress’ title, which both have used to build their public personalities.
The two, widely known by the title “Empress,” have openly discussed how it became a part of their brand identities.
In an interview on Pure FM, Empress Gifty explained that she had officially registered the name when she entered the showbiz industry.
She even referenced her 2016 car number plate, “Empress 16,” as proof of her claim.
“There are many people who use the name Empress, but for me, it’s my name. My sister, McBrown, even uses it,” she stated.
Empress Gifty added, “The key is not to let anyone come between you and the relationships you’ve built. I’ve always had a beautiful relationship with the name Empress Gifty.”
Agaga’s passing
Empress Gifty announced the passing of her mother on December 14, 2024, after a brief illness.
