The Northern Regional Minister, Ali Adolf G. John, says that fixing the longstanding water crisis in Tamale and its surrounding areas will be his top priority as he takes office as the Regional Minister.

Speaking to journalists at the Regional Coordinating Council here on his first day in office yesterday, he assured residents of swift and decisive action to improve water access.

“President John Dramani Mahama has emphasised that resolving Tamale’s water challenges is a key government agenda, and I am here to ensure that this vision becomes a reality,” Mr John stated.

“We cannot allow residents to continue suffering from erratic water supply. Immediate steps will be taken to enhance our water infrastructure,” he added.

His remarks come amid growing frustrations from residents who had endured years of “water rationing and unreliable access to clean drinking water.”

The Ghana Water Company has struggled to meet the increasing demand, exacerbated by Tamale’s rapid urban expansion.

The minister assured the public that new infrastructure projects and emergency interventions would soon be rolled out to address these concerns.

Many residents currently buy water from private suppliers at high costs, which places a significant financial burden on them.

Mr Saeed Yakubu, a resident of Kalpohine Estate, commended the minister for prioritising the water issue, saying, “If this problem is resolved during his tenure, it will be a huge relief for thousands of people.”

Beyond tackling the water crisis, the Minister also outlined his broader vision for regional development, emphasising the need to empower local communities by boosting agricultural productivity and creating economic opportunities.

“I assure residents of a collaborative approach to governance, with an open administration that works closely with stakeholders to drive regional development,” he noted.

Additionally, he promised to work with security agencies to maintain peace and stability, which he described as essential for progress.

“We can only develop the Northern Region when there is peace. I will work hand in hand with security forces to ensure stability, allowing us to focus on the real task—development,” he stated.
