British Ghanaian record producer, composer and entrepreneur Myx Quest has shared thoughtful reflections on the 2025 Telecel Ghana Music Awards (TGMA), sparking a timely conversation about the balance between popularity and artistic creativity in award shows.

In a post shared on X (formerly Twitter), Quest praised the event’s overall organization, citing “great sound” and “some good performances” as highlights. However, he also pointed out areas for improvement, particularly the event’s length and its criteria for recognition.

“It was a nice event, organised, great sound, some good performances but it went on a bit too long. Also, I feel there should be more categories that focus on and appreciate creativity/craft rather than mainly numbers and hype,” he posted.

The comment quickly gained traction, resonating with many in the Ghanaian and broader African music industry who have long expressed similar concerns that major music award shows often prioritize commercial success over innovation, lyrical depth, and production quality.

Myx Quest; a longtime voting member of the Recording Academy (GRAMMYs), also founder and director of Ghana-based Vibes & Fusion Orchestra, known for his genre-blending music production and emphasis on artistry, has been a consistent advocate for creative excellence in music. His call for more categories that spotlight craftsmanship aligns with a growing demand across the continent for a more balanced approach to recognition in the music industry.

With the 2025 TGMA now in the rear-view mirror, industry watchers are already looking ahead to TGMA 2026, hoping the organizers take Quest’s insights into account. His feedback underscores the importance of evolving the awards to not just reflect who dominated the charts, but also who pushed the boundaries of sound, storytelling, and culture.

As the African music scene continues to grow in global influence, voices like Myx Quest’s are critical in shaping a future that values both impact and integrity.

Myx Quest, whose real name is Myx Boadi-Alawiye Michael Kofi Quest, recently announced as Ghana Music Awards UK – “UK Producer of the Year”, has a rich history in the music industry, having worked with a wide range of artists across various genres.

He’s worked with artists such as Beyoncé, Solange, Sarkodie, Bien, M.anifest, Efya, Kelvyn Boy, Fameye, AratheJay etc.

In addition to his music career, Quest is also known for his entrepreneurial ventures, including his role as the owner of Qirv, a company that encompasses music production, property development, and a health and wellness online business.

Reflecting on #TGMA26 @GHMusicAwards it was a nice event, organised, great sound, some good performances but went on a bit too long. Also I feel there should be more categories that focus on and appreciate creativity / craft rather than mainly numbers and hype. Roll on TGMA27! 🙏🏿 pic.twitter.com/05ERSRvJ6Z
