Minority Leader, Alexander Afenyo-Markin Minority Leader, Alexander Afenyo-Markin

Alexander Afenyo-Markin, the minority leader, has spoken out about his unsuccessful attempt to reform the Ghana Water Company Limited (GWCL) while serving as board chair. He disclosed that he was harassed mercilessly for attempting to bring about necessary changes in the sector.

Afenyo-Markin utilized his own experience as a warning during the Deputy Minister-Designate of Energy’s vetting process, pointing out that real reform initiatives in important state institutions are frequently thwarted by ingrained political and administrative resistance.

“I tried to reform Ghana Water, and I rather became the victim. It makes me sad as a politician because we don’t support each other for real reforms,” he lamented.

He lamented the pattern of aggressive reformers encountering opposition from special interests, which results in inefficiencies and stagnation that last through succeeding administrations.

Afenyo-Markin made these remarks following talks on the potential privatization of the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG), which has encountered strong opposition from a section of the public.

Based on his experience with Ghana Water, he advised Gyan-Mensah, the Deputy Energy Minister-Designate, to be ready for opposition but should not waver.
