Ghanaian musician Olivetheboy has said his mother once threatened to have him arrested for planning to release music without informing his family.

In an interview on The Delay Show, the artiste said his mother, a teacher, was upset when she saw promotions of his debut release online. At the time, she believed he was still in school.

“She called me the day before the release, asking why I was putting out a song without telling them. She said if I didn’t take the promos down, she was going to arrest me,” he said.

Olivetheboy explained that he did not inform anyone he was pursuing music. His parents thought he was attending lectures, but he had stopped going and was instead recording with his producer.

“I just hit up my producer. We went to the studio a few weeks after I got to campus and started recording. So all along, they thought I was in school,” the 21-year-old musician said.

According to him, he was 18 at the time and believed his mother’s threat would not materialise, suggesting that he was no longer a minor. His father also expressed concern, referencing the family’s religious background.

“My dad also called me, talking a lot about me being a pastor’s son. It was a whole lot,” he said. “But sometimes, the mother actually has the power, so I managed to talk to my mum and she also talked to my dad.”

He said his parents now support his career and even attended the Vodafone Ghana Music Awards.

Born Joel Ofori Bonsu, Olivetheboy, began his professional musical journey in 2020. In June 2023, he was named Apple Music’s Up Next Star, recognizing his impact on global music charts. His music blends traditional Ghanaian sounds with contemporary Afrobeats, reflecting his identity as a Ghanaian artist on the global stage.
