Fast-rising Ghanaian musician, Samuel Yaw Antwi, popularly known as Yaw Darling, has shared how his father once threatened to disown him over his decision to pursue music.
In an interview on Adom TV on April 19, 2025, Yaw Darling disclosed that his father, who had remarried, disapproved of his career choice, leaving him with little family support in his early days.
“I didn’t get much support from home when I started music. My father even threatened to disown me if I continued to do music. By then, he had a new wife, and she didn’t like it. But I told him music was what I wanted to do,” he said.
He added that despite the challenges, he remained determined, and his breakthrough came in 2020 when a song he released went viral in the Central Region, earning him his first TV appearance on GTV.
“I remember around 2020, I had done a song that blew up all over the Central Region. That was when GTV called me. It was my first time on TV. At that point, my family saw that there was potential in what I was doing,” he added.
Yaw Darling noted that despite his achievements, his father was unaware of them until someone else informed him.
“My father was not aware of my achievements. When I finally got signed by a record label, he wasn’t aware. When I got the ambassadorial deal with ZeePay, he wasn’t even aware. He didn’t like the fact that I was doing music, so he wasn’t following my progress,” he explained.
It could be recalled that in an earlier interview on TV3’s Afternoon Show, Yaw Darling’s father, Kwabena Badu, admitted he had hoped his son would become a footballer, given his talent in sports.
However, he said he now supports Yaw Darling’s music career and expresses pride in his progress.
Meanwhile, Yaw Darling has been nominated for the 2025 Telecel Ghana Music Awards (TGMA) Unsung Artiste category, which will take place on May 10, 2025.
