President of the Musicians Union of Ghana (MUSIGA), Bessa Simons President of the Musicians Union of Ghana (MUSIGA), Bessa Simons

The President of the Musicians Union of Ghana (MUSIGA), Bessa Simons, has disclosed that the leadership of the union has formally proposed to the government that late gospel icon Yaw Sarpong be granted a state-assisted funeral.

According to him, the call is justified considering Yaw Sarpong’s immense contribution to the growth and development of Ghana’s music industry, particularly within the gospel fraternity.

He described the late musician as a pacesetter whose ministry touched countless lives and whose songs continue to inspire generations of music lovers.

Speaking on Showbiz 360 with Giovani Caleb, Bessa Simons explained that while MUSIGA does not have the authority to grant state honours, it can officially petition the government to consider such recognition for deserving music legends.

“It is only the President who can give the final approval, but we can propose to the government to give our music legends a state-assisted burial,” he stated.

He revealed that the union has already taken steps in that direction, engaging the appropriate authorities to ensure that Yaw Sarpong receives the honour befitting his status and legacy.

The MUSIGA President stressed that state-assisted funerals are not merely ceremonial but serve as national recognition of individuals whose work significantly shaped the country’s cultural and creative landscape.

Yaw Sarpong, widely regarded as one of the pillars of Ghanaian gospel music, built a remarkable career spanning decades.

Through his music and ministry, he uplifted souls, nurtured talents, and played a key role in elevating gospel music to mainstream prominence.
