Media personality and playwright George Quaye has raised concerns about the financial burden placed on musicians to promote their work, while media houses allegedly profit from their music without providing fair compensation.
In a recent Facebook post, Quaye pointed out the irony of artistes having to pay hefty sums for airtime to advertise their projects and concerts, while the same radio and TV stations frequently play their songs without paying the required royalties.
“It’s concerning how many musicians struggle to pay media houses large sums of money for airtime to promote their concerts, while these same media houses often use their songs without paying royalties,” he wrote.

Quaye’s comments add to those of several musicians and industry stakeholders who have called for stricter royalty enforcement and fairer revenue-sharing models.
Musicians such as Cwesi Oteng, Ohemaa Mercy, Sarkodie and many others have publicly criticised Ghana’s poor royalty collection system and urged the relevant bodies to take proactive steps to address the problem.
