Naab Ibrahim Awudu, popularly known as “Gold Baron,” a musician cum assemblyman for the Gaare-Gban electoral area, has been sentenced by a Bolgatanga Circuit Court for threatening to harm a businessman “polo”.
The case stemmed from an audio recording Gold Baron posted on social media, inciting youth to attack a local gold miner, Zongdan Boyak Kolog, known as “Polo.”
The recording revealed Gold Baron’s intent to prevent Polo from working on his concession.
The court found Gold Baron’s claims of merely trying to calm tensions unconvincing, stating his words constituted a “call to cause harm.”
Despite admitting to the recording, Gold Baron’s defense failed to sway the judge.
The conviction followed a complaint filed by Polo after hearing the threatening audio. The case garnered significant public interest, with residents attending the court proceedings.
Gold Baron was given the option of a fine of 100 penalty units (GH¢1,200) or a three-month prison sentence. His lawyer’s plea for mitigation, citing Gold Baron’s first-time offender status, dependents, and position as an assemblyman, influenced the judge’s decision.
His associates quickly paid the fine, avoiding jail time. Despite avoiding imprisonment, Gold Baron left the courtroom visibly distressed by the conviction.
