A murder investigation has been launched after an elderly man was found dead in a south London home.

The Met Police has arrested a man, 36, on suspicion of the murder of the 85-year-old pensioner.

The London Ambulance Service called police officers to the property in Streatham at around 1pm on Friday after discovering the victim with several injuries.

He was pronounced dead at the scene despite the best efforts of emergency services to save his life.

Formal identification of the victim has yet to take place. A post-mortem examination will take place in due course.

The murder suspect, meanwhile, remains in custody amid a police probe.

DCI Sarah Lee, who is leading the investigation, said: ‘We are working hard to piece together the events that unfolded in Churchmore Road yesterday, and offer our heartfelt condolences to the family of the victim and those affected by this tragic incident.

‘We will continue to have an increased presence in the area whilst we continue our enquiries.

‘We are not currently looking for any other suspects.’
