The murder of Charlie Kirk, a conservative activist and close ally of President Donald Trump has raised safety concerns amongst football fans on social media ahead of the 2026 FIFA World Cup in the United States of America.

Charlie Kirk, a conservative political activist and co-founder of Turning Point USA, was fatally shot while engaging students in a Q&A session at an event at Utah Valley University on Wednesday, September 10, 2025.

His death was announced hours later by president Trump on social media as monitored by GhanaWeb Sports.

“I ask all Americans to commit themselves to the American values for which Charlie Kirk lived & died. The values of free speech, citizenship, the rule of law & the patriotic devotion & love of God,” the statement shared by the White House read.

This development, together with additional reports about gun violence in the US has sparked conversations online about safety ahead of the 2026 FIFA Word Cup.

Football fans on social media have urged FIFA to take the hosting rights from the US because the country is not safe for football.

Though the US will co-host the World Cup with Canada and Mexico, 78 out of the total 104 matches will be played on American soil.

USA is probably one of the unsafest countries in this world.

How are people getting stabbed and shot at in broad day light like it’s nothing??

FIFA should reconsider hosting the WC in USA before one Messi fan go just shoot Ronaldo. It’s not beyond what they can do.

Football fans are saying the World Cup shouldn’t be hosted in America🤔 pic.twitter.com/pzh4SmN6AU

You will never ever catch me stepping foot in America in my lifetime, that place is rotten to the core. The damage that has been done to that country is irreversible, how can you even think of hosting the World Cup in that shithole? I genuinely fear for the safety of the players.

If America can’t protect it’s citizens, then they can’t protect the player’s and supporters coming from different part of the world! The world cup is not safe in America https://t.co/P01JXnqgKt

If this madness happens elsewhere especially in Africa, CNN would scream “failed state.” Yet America, drowning in mass shootings, wants to host the World Cup. FIFA must stop pretending. It’s reckless to stage a global tournament in a country that can’t even secure its own streets https://t.co/uUhMMb04W8

Cancel FIFA as well as any world sporting events in the United States it’s NO longer safe to visit especially for foreigners https://t.co/Pt2ZlOse80

    — ray (@ray34ford) September 10, 2025

The USA is not a safe place for people to be visiting, in the next three years they host the World Cup and the Olympics

Both events need to be relocated, there should be no confidence from governing officials of FIFA & IOC that athletes or fans will be safe there

Just after the death of Kirk, another violent act taken place in America. They wouldn’t want to agree but hosting the world cup in America needs to be investigated more before that day. https://t.co/UjQCy4FefJ pic.twitter.com/jsr2aspQRU

Gun laws fucked, ICE running wild, schools unsafe they can’t even protect classrooms. America has no business hosting the entire world for the World Cup 💀. It’s the biggest , Most watched sport event for crying out loud !!! https://t.co/Y2ZYymiv69
