Former Ghana midfielder Sulley Muntari believes Mohammed Kudus is destined to captain the Black Stars in the future but disapproves of the technical team’s recent decision to hand him the armband.

Muntari described the move as premature, even though he acknowledged Kudus’ natural leadership abilities and remarkable talent.

Kudus, who plays for West Ham United, was appointed captain by head coach Otto Addo in October 2024 after Thomas Partey’s withdrawal from the squad due to injury.

The 24-year-old midfielder led the team in back-to-back games against Sudan in Ghana’s 2026 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifiers.

Unfortunately, Ghana’s hopes of qualifying for the tournament were dashed after those encounters.

Muntari stressed that while Kudus will undoubtedly become captain in the future, it should be a gradual process.

“Kudus, no matter what, is going to be the captain of the national team one day,” he said.

“Let it be smooth for him, don’t just rush him. He doesn’t need the armband, but he commands on the field. He carries the whole nation on his shoulder, and he plays with us.

Ghana’s national team is set to return to action in March 2024 for the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers, hoping to bounce back after their AFCON disappointment.
