    • Woman, 49, dead in Gippsland crash
    • Several others with serious injuries

By MAX ALDRED FOR DAILY MAIL AUSTRALIA

    Published: 17:58 EDT, 11 May 2025 | Updated: 18:20 EDT, 11 May 2025

A mother has been killed in a two-car smash-up which also left several others seriously injured in Victoria’s Gippsland region.

The two vehicles collided at the intersection of North Canal Road and Willow Grove Road, Trafalgar, on Mother’s Day, about 5.55pm.

It is believed one of the cars did not stop at a stop sign before it crashed with the other in the middle of the intersection.

One of the vehicles, carrying a 49-year-old woman, a 52-year-old male driver, a 19-year-old girl and a 15-year-old boy, careered off the road and tumbled down an embankment after the collision.

Emergency responders declared the woman dead at the scene.

The other occupants sustained serious injuries and were rushed to hospital.

The driver of the second vehicle, a 60-year-old man, sustained minor injuries.

His passenger, a 58-year-old woman, was transported to hospital with serious injuries.

Investigations into the incident are ongoing.

Victoria Police Detective sergeant Mark Amos labelled the incident an ‘absolute tragedy’.

‘We’ve got the loss of a life, a wife, a mother, on Mother’s Day (who) is killed in a crash that just should never ever have occurred,’ he said, according to Seven News.

Det Amos said the it appeared as though the sedan carrying the family had passed the stopped sign.

Images from the scene show extensive damage to the passenger side of the car.

‘Driving a car on our roads is not an easy task. It’s a complicated task and it’s to be taken seriously and just a moment of inattention, a moment’s distraction, you go through a stop sign and you ruin your life and lives of your family, in one single blow,’ Det Amos said.

‘The simple message is, “pay attention, be alert, slow down, concentrate”. Because without doing that, you’re going to lose somebody; somebody dear, somebody close and somebody important.’

Det Amos said the exact circumstances of the crash remained under investigation.

He said it could take ‘some time’ to figure out.

Police have urged anyone with information or dashcam footage of the incident to contact Crime Stoppers.
