By JOANNA HYNDS FOR DAILY MAIL and CAITLIN POWELL – NEWS REPORTER

    Published: 20:11 EDT, 2 October 2026 | Updated: 20:35 EDT, 2 October 2026

Multiple people have been injured in Newcastle after a car drove into a crowd of thousands of Knights fans as they waved off the city’s NRL team.

Emergency services were called to the Newcastle Link Road roundabout on Transfield Avenue at about 9.30am on Saturday following reports a vehicle had struck a crowd.

‘Several people have been injured and are currently receiving treatment at the scene,’ NSW Police said.

‘The driver of the vehicle was arrested at the scene.’

More than 10 ambulances have rushed to the scene as well as three helicopters.

It is understood those injured were among fans who had gathered to farewell the Newcastle Knights as they set off for Sunday’s NRL Grand Final.

NSW MP Sonia Hornery confirmed the incident had impacted the gathering.

‘I’ve just become aware of an incident involving a vehicle colliding with pedestrians on Newcastle Link Rd while knights fans were there to cheer on the team coach,’ she said.

‘Emergency services are on site. Newcastle Link Road is closed in both directions. Please avoid the area.

‘I hope everyone involved is ok.’

The incident impacted the planned route of the Newcastle Knights Grand Final procession, which was diverted via an alternate route.

The team bus has now departed Newcastle. Newcastle Link Road has been closed in both directions and is expected to remain closed for some time while inquiries continue.

‘Police acknowledge many loyal supporters may have missed the opportunity to see the team and show their support,’ a statement said.

‘Members of the public are asked to safely disperse from the area and keep roadways clear to assist emergency services and traffic management efforts.

‘Police thank the community for their patience, cooperation and assistance. Further information will be provided as it becomes available.’

    More to come.
