Muhammadu Buhari, Nigeria’s former President, has passed away at a clinic in London. The news was confirmed by his family through a statement signed by his former media aide, Garba Shehu. Buhari served as Nigeria’s President from 2015 to 2023 and previously led the country as a military head of state from 1983 to 1985.

Buhari was known for his anti-corruption stance and efforts to reform Nigeria’s economy and military. He rose through the ranks of the Nigerian Army to become a Major General and seized power in a military coup in 1983. After being overthrown in 1985, Buhari returned to power in 2015, winning the presidential election and serving two terms until 2023.

The former President’s legacy is marked by significant developments in infrastructure and security challenges, leaving a lasting impact on Nigeria’s democratic landscape. His presidency was also marked by efforts to combat corruption and promote economic growth.

The Presidency has reacted to Buhari’s passing, with President Tinubu ordering flags to be flown at half-staff as a mark of respect. Vice President Kashim Shettima has been instructed to proceed to the United Kingdom to accompany President Buhari’s body back to Nigeria. Tributes are pouring in from across the country and beyond, with many remembering him for his discipline, integrity, and influence in shaping Nigeria’s democratic journey.
