Mpasaaso Shop Owner Arrested for Alleged Electricity Meter Tampering

A female shop owner in Mpasaaso, Ashanti Region, has been apprehended for allegedly tampering with her electricity meter to avoid paying accurate power bills. The suspect was operating an energy-intensive business with four refrigerators, including three deep freezers, and other high-energy-consuming appliances, all connected without a single fuse, raising safety and regulatory concerns.

Authorities believe the deliberate absence of fuses and the altered meter setup were designed to bypass normal electricity readings, enabling her to consume large amounts of power without detection or proper billing. This practice not only drains the country’s power resources but also poses significant fire and safety risks.

The suspect is currently in custody and faces charges related to power theft and endangerment. Investigations are ongoing to determine if other individuals were involved in the illegal connection.

According to Ghana’s Electricity Act, tampering with an electricity meter can result in up to three years of imprisonment or a fine, or both.

The operation to uncover the illegal connection is part of a nationwide exercise aimed at clamping down on power theft and protecting the national grid’s integrity. Officials from the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) have cautioned that such practices will not be tolerated and have urged the public to report suspicious activities.

Authorities are urging the public to cooperate with energy audit teams and report any suspicious activities to help prevent power theft and ensure a fair power distribution system across the country.
