The Member of Parliament for Kpando, Sebastian Deh, who serves as a member of the Public Accounts Committee, has underscored the need for authorities to deal ruthlessly with the payment of unearned salaries to civil servants.

He lamented that the persistent challenges with the validation of civil servants for salary payments led to payroll irregularities amounting to GHS 58 million in 2024.

He made the remarks while addressing journalists after PAC’s sitting on Friday, August 22, 2025.

“What is of concern to me is what borders on payroll irregularities. The total figure cited by the Auditor-General’s 2024 report was in the region of over GH¢3 billion. Payroll irregularities alone accounted for a whopping GHS 58 million. These are potential funds that would have been lost to the public purse if they had not been detected by the auditors,” he said.

He noted that there was a need for stricter procedures, controls, and monitoring systems to be instituted to curb such practices and prevent future losses.

One of the highlights on Friday was that the Committee, led by its Chairman, Abeka Osei Asare, ordered the recovery of GH¢17,703.28 wrongly paid to Stephen Akomeah, a teacher in Donkorkrom.

The teacher was found to have received a transport allowance meant exclusively for physically challenged teachers, despite having no disability.
