Ghanaian singer and songwriter Jackline Acheampong, popularly known as Gyakie, has stated that while most of her music draws from her personal experiences, she also writes with her listeners in mind.

In an interview with AJ Poundz on Onua TV on June 2, 2025, Gyakie opened up on the inspiration behind her latest release, “Sankofa”, and the concept that shaped the song.

“‘Sankofa’ is the first song I released in 2025. I’ve been working on my album for the past three years, and as we all know, ‘sankofa’ isn’t a taboo concept. It’s actually a love song. I wrote it with certain listeners in mind,” Gyakie explained.

She added, “Most of my songs are drawn from my own experiences, but sometimes I craft the story to resonate with others. With ‘Sankofa’, I had a storyline: some people come out of bad relationships but often feel the urge to go back because of lingering emotions. So in this song, someone who’s found love again is asking their new partner to treat them right, so they won’t feel the need to return to their past.”

The ‘Forever’ hitmaker also expressed admiration for the storytelling abilities of songwriters, likening their creativity to that of film directors.

“I believe songwriters have the potential to direct movies. The way we craft stories through music truly amazes me sometimes,” she added.
