More than 50,000 registered voters in the Akwatia Constituency of the Eastern Region are heading to the polls today, Tuesday, September 2, 2025, to elect a new Member of Parliament, replacing the late Ernest Kumi.

The by-election has become one of the most closely watched contests in recent years, drawing national attention as a fierce political showdown between Ghana’s two leading parties, the National Democratic Congress (NDC) and the New Patriotic Party (NPP).

The NDC has fielded Bernard Bediako Baidoo, while the NPP’s candidate is Solomon Kwame Asumadu.

Both candidates have staged vigorous campaigns in recent weeks, with national executives and party leaders making high-profile visits to Akwatia to rally support.

The Ghana Police Service has deployed over 5,500 officers across the constituency to guarantee peace and order.

Officers have been tasked with ensuring security before, during and after voting, with strong warnings issued against voter intimidation, violence and any breaches of electoral rules.

Police have assured the public of their readiness to act decisively against offenders.

Meanwhile, the Electoral Commission (EC) has pledged to conduct a transparent, credible and well-organized election.
