    Two army trucks have collided on a regional road injuring dozens of soldiers and leaving two trapped inside the wrecked vehicles.

    Paramedics were called to reports of an army truck having been rolled over on Tregeagle Road in Tregeagle, 9km east of Lismore, at 5.05pm on Saturday.

    Initial reports indicate there are 22 injured but the actual total could rise as high as 36 once the area has been properly evaluated.

    At present eight of those are seriously injured but the two soldiers still stuck in the overturned vehicles have yet to be evaluated.

    NSW Ambulance sent out 18 vehicles in response to the call for help.

    It is understood some people are currently stuck in the vehicle.

    A steady stream defence personnel has been passing in and out of the area and of ambulances have begun transporting injured soldiers to Lismore Base Hospital.

    Some of the seriously injured soldiers are understood to be awaiting medical helicopters as they need to be evacuated by air from the site.

     The soldiers were in the area to assist locals who had been impacted by heavy rainfall and floods caused by Cyclone Alfred in recent days.
