The Director of Legal Affairs of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC), Godwin Edudzi Tameklo, has rejected claims that mobile money interoperability was the brainchild of former Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia.

In a strongly worded post on social media, Edudzi Tameklo, argued that the foundations for the initiative were laid under President John Dramani Mahama. He noted that the Bank of Ghana had signed the interoperability contract in 2016, before the New Patriotic Party (NPP) assumed office in January 2017.

According to him, the Akufo-Addo-Bawumia administration only reviewed the cost of the contract after taking office and subsequently proceeded with its implementation.

“How is this the brainchild of Dr. Bawumia?” Edudzi Tameklo questioned.

He also dismissed attempts to credit Dr. Bawumia with the rapid growth of the mobile money industry, stressing that the sector had been experiencing organic expansion well before 2017. Tameklo attributed the increase in mobile money agents to consumer demand and the natural evolution of Ghana’s telecom sector, rather than direct government policy.

Warning against what he described as political exaggeration, the NDC legal director declared: “A man should never get to the point where he believes in his own lies.”

The debate over mobile money interoperability continues to be a flashpoint in Ghana’s political discourse, as both major parties seek to claim credit for the financial inclusion milestone.
